to blackface, or not to blackface? what exactly are the noticeable differences? is there really that much of a tone differential between the two? would a mod on an early silverface accurately capture the sound of a 66 blackface? how much do those mods typically cost? does that mean it's quiet in general, or just quieter than the bassman? is it a loud enough amp for loud practice settings and bar/small club gigs and such?Ģ. you guys scare me by saying that the bandmaster is quieter than the bassman. I know there's another thread here that pins one versus the other.īut i have some issues that i'd like experienced views on, if you could?!ġ. i'm heavily leaning towards the bandmaster. Suggestion 1: two 12F150 (8 ohm, 50w, light dope) The 12F150 is the quintessential speaker for any Blackface of Silverface amp for the classic Fender tone. i'm new here because of a recent research and search i've begun with regards to old bassmans and bandmasters. Definitely a good starting point and you can bridge channels. The least expensive Bandmaster heads are the silverface '70's models.

With a 2X12 open-back combo cab it is essentially a non-reverb Pro Reverb, but I think I'd go with a 2X10, just for convenience and portability. I think that is the direction I would go with a Bandmaster if I hadn't had this amp for 37 years. Right now my largest Fender amp other than the Bandmaster is a Bassman 2X10 combo in a custom cab from Ampwares. My son has been using it lately, as I've been downsizing my amplifiers. The closed back cab has a tendency to "beam" but I love to tilt it back on its' legs, almost like a monitor. If it's pushed too far it can harden and turn nasty. And sing it does, with lots of lows and an old-school clean Fender tone. I'm not thinking of reversing them though, the amp sounds amazing with a Tele, but has to be turned up fairly (quite, actually) loud to start singing. I did these 2 mods because I felt it sounded better with the humbucker pups I was using at the time. The feedback resistor is changed to 1500 ohms and the preamp tube cathodes have been separated. The caps have been changed and it has NOS RCA pre-amp tubes and GE 6L6GC's.

  • Changed 250pf ceramic preamp caps to silver micas.I have a '64 Bandmaster with the original 2X12 bottom (w/ Jensen C12N RI speakers).

I sold this amp to my good friend Geoff, but am going to leave this page up for the mods and because it's such a cool amp. I used a couple of RCA 7025s and an EH 12AX7 for the preamp.Īfter all that, the amp sounds great!!! Utterly terrific classic Fender tone with superb cleans, and great overdrive when cranked with a Tube Screamer.

(See below for how to do this mod.) Finally, I swapped out the 250pf ceramic caps in the preamp, and the 500pf ceramic in the phase inverter for a silver mica. The bright switch caps I left alone.Īs far as tubes go, I'm running a pair of Sovtek 5881's right now, the amp sounds great with them. Also, I replaced the tremolo intensity pot with one that had a switch on it, so I could switch the tremolo circuit in and out of the signal path, providing a very noticeable bump in gain for the amp. I have modified most of my other Fender amps in one way or another and wanted to keep this one as stock as possible, so I only did a couple of minor mods. The first thing I did was to replace all the electrolytic caps and installed a grounded power cord. It obviously needed a cap job and a tune-up. It had bad power tubes in it and didn't sound very good.

Quality wire and parts, and very neat layout. You can sure tell the difference from a pre-CBS amp and one that Leo built. This Bandmaster was bone stock when I got it check out the picture below.
